I participated in a very fruitful seminar today, November 12, on the topic of the funding climate in life sciences.
Stockholm Science City organized the seminar and they had invited five very knowledgeable speakers. A big thank you to all of you!
The discussion focused on the funding climate in life sciences and it became clear that there are major challenges. At the same time, it also showed the great opportunities that exist. Here are my reflections:
Venture capital and public funding are often crucial in the early stages. However, it is in the next stage that things get really tough. Entrepreneurs must be able to answer questions like:
International networks and a long-term approach are key.
The money is 'out there', but it is increasingly concentrated in fewer companies. Competition for international capital is extremely tough. This in turn places even greater demands on our entrepreneurs to deliver.
Collaboration between academia, industry, funders and stakeholder organizations is necessary to both take advantage of opportunities and meet challenges. There are over 4000 companies in the life science sector in Sweden. We must therefore dare to think bigger and become better at collaborating so that investors will dare to invest in our innovations.
Even though the funding climate has become tougher and there is much more international competition for money, I want to believe in the industry and all the great entrepreneurs out there. They are entrepreneurs who need to be jack of all trades to succeed. Dare to use the skills of others and build your network nationally and internationally. If you are good enough, there will be capital!
