There have been major changes in the retail business area, mainly because of the boom in e-commerce. The outcome is new customer segments with new sets of requirements on a retail company’s Supply chain.
Requirements include easy to use ordering processes, express delivery options, simplified return logistics processes and good customer support. These customer requirements lead to requirements on functional changes on E-commerce portals, ERP-system, automation, warehousing and product catalogues.
Retail companies must realize that the customer drives the required changes, which leads to the fact that the company must be more flexible and customer oriented. This also leads to the fact that the companies might need to evaluate existing partner rela-tionships, and potentially change those or even change partners! The retail companies, which have analyzed, understood and adapted to the new situation, with an increased level of flexibility, are the fastest growing ones.
The old theory within change management, “It is the best adaptors that survive” is also valid here. The ones that do not adapt, will face the risk of not surviving.
We think that there are better and worse methods and tools to conduct this journey, and that guidance will be needed.
